Maxiais is a village in the parish of Sobreira Formosa, and municipality of Proença-a-Nova. Located between Sobreira and the village of Sobral Fernando, on the road to Foz do Cobrão (Vila Velha de Rodão), its annual attraction is the pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Easter Monday).
A town with its origins in the reconquest, it has resisted the emptying of rural areas by encouraging holiday leisure and the search for free and natural spaces. In 1911, according to Father Catharino, 211 people lived in the village in 31 residences, a number already very small in 2018.
The word maxiais derives from machial, a type of shrub common in the region, suitable for grazing goats.
